Campaign’s alarm heard overseas

Executive Summary

Governments of China and Vietnam are investigating the safety of baby bath products the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics found to contain trace amounts of 1,4-dioxane and formaldehyde, the watchdog group reports in a March 19 release. According to the Campaign, some retailers in China, Vietnam and Taiwan have pulled implicated products from the shelves, and health authorities in Israel have announced that U.S. baby products containing the suspected carcinogens are not sold in the country. Buzz generated by the Campaign's "Toxic Tub" report, released March 12, has Congress demanding action. Sen. Kristin Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) has drafted a letter to FDA saying she finds it "unacceptable" that the agency does not regulate personal care as it does drugs (see story, p. 3). Sen. Diane Feinstein, (D-Calif.), has stated an intention to introduce legislation that would change that
