Executive Summary
Final version of the Cosmos organic standard has been released, Organic Monitor reports June 11. The product of extended negotiations between six European organic certification agencies - including the Soil Association, BDIH and Ecocert - Cosmos will open itself to the certification process in September. Organic Monitor notes that Cosmos will have to compete against other organic standards for the attention of industry and consumers, including NaTrue in Europe and, in the U.S., NSF International's "Made with Organic" standard, among others on the way such as the Organic and Sustainable Industry Standards (OASIS). Organic Monitor will offer classes to address the differences among the standards and the major technical and formulation issues raised by them, it says; the next class is to be held July 8 in London, with classes following in North America and Asia later in the year

COSMOS "constitution" set
European organizations BDIH from Germany, Cosmebio and Ecocert from France, ICEA from Italy and the U.K.'s Soil Association have formed a non-profit association to develop the COSMOS standard as an internationally recognized standard for organic and natural cosmetics. The COSMOS-standard AISBL will "ensure cooperation between all parties for the benefits of consumers," BDIH's Harald Dittmar says in a release. The constitution for the standard was incorporated by members on May 4. The association will further develop the COSMOS standard, oversee and authorize certification, as well as "evolve continually in the direction of more organic ingredients and environmental improvement," according to May 18 release. Cosmebio's Betty Santonnat was appointed secretary general for daily management of the non-profit. The association will be open to new member organizations once it receives a royal decree from Belgian authorities.
