FDA tobacco oversight bill passes to President

Executive Summary

Bipartisan legislation giving FDA regulatory responsibility over production, sale and marketing of tobacco products passes House June 12 after clearing Senate the day before. The Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act moves next to the White House for signature promised by President Obama. H.R. 1256 requires agency to establish a Center for Tobacco Products within 90 days upon enactment of the law. Counting FDA's Center for Toxicological Research, tobacco brings total number of FDA centers to seven. User fees will fund program; legislators behind the bill maintain resources will not be diverted from other activities
